Smoke alarms chirp at night for a physical reason: battery voltage drops as the house cools, and an alarm sitting right on the low-battery threshold tips over it at 2am. The chirp is the alarm telling you something, and it is usually one of these four things.
1. Low battery
A single chirp every 30 to 60 seconds. On an older alarm with a replaceable 9V battery, replace the battery. On a 10-year sealed alarm, a low-battery chirp means the alarm has reached end of life and the whole unit is replaced. On a hardwired alarm with battery backup, the backup battery is flat, which often means the mains circuit has been off or the alarm is old.
2. End of life
Alarms are built to be replaced at 10 years. Many models chirp on a different pattern (for example two chirps a minute, or a chirp with a flashing light) when they time out. Check the date on the back. If it is 2016 or earlier, replace it regardless of what else you do.
3. Dust, insects or humidity
A chirp or a short false alarm with no pattern, especially in bathrooms, near kitchens or in Queensland's wet season. Vacuum the alarm's vents gently with the brush attachment. If it keeps happening, the alarm may be in the wrong place and a licensed electrician should move it.
4. A fault in an interconnected system
If your alarms are interconnected, one faulty unit can trigger chirps or alarms across the whole house. Finding the culprit means standing under each alarm in turn; the faulty one usually shows a different light pattern. This is the most common 2am call we get from home owners, and it is why our maintenance plans include unlimited standard smoke alarm service calls.
What not to do
Do not take the battery out and leave it. Do not disconnect a hardwired alarm. Do not silence it with tape. A disabled alarm is the single most common factor in fatal house fires, and in a rental it is an offence.
When to call
If the chirping continues after a new battery or a clean, if you cannot identify which alarm it is, or if your alarms are more than 10 years old, book a service call. If you are on a Vogue maintenance plan the visit is included. If you are not, this is a good moment to check whether your alarms are compliant for 2027, because most chirping alarms are not.
